The Postdoc Committee are launching the ‘3 Slide Talks‘, a series of talks for postdocs from all disciplines to share their research with the diverse college community. However, the research must be presented in 3 slides.
That’s right – our postdocs have three slides to show-off their amazing research (15 minutes plus 5-10mins Q&A). The talks will start at 5pm and discussions can continue into the evening, over a pint and some pizza. The theme of the talks will vary. Speakers are encouraged to be as creative as they wish with the presentation but the three slide rule applies.
SAMPLE PRESENTATION FORMAT (where appropriate, supported by visuals and/or text):
[Slide 1] Thesis statement or key research question(s).
[Slide 2] Why this is an original contribution to knowledge/humanity.
[Slide 3] How this research will enrich the audiences’ daily life. What is the impact of your research?
OBJECTIVE: INTERDISCIPLINARY EXCHANGE
As postdocs, we are often required to think about how our research impacts the world. We don’t get a lot of practice with how to ‘sell’ our research apart from when we are writing grants or applying for jobs. The 3 Slide Talks offer an opportunity to exchange ideas with an intelligent audience and come up with other areas and ways in which our research may have an impact in other disciplines or in our societies. This is a platform for postdocs to share their knowledge, their passion for research, and a chance to challenge common beliefs about specific disciplines and their importance in the eye of other researchers.
